Durable 7th-Axis Systems From Bishop-Wisecarver Expand Automation Possibilities

Robot positioning systems systems can significantly extend the automation capabilities of both traditional and collaborative robots in manufacturing and industrial settings. For example, robot transfer units (RTU) and 7th-axis motion systems from Bishop-Wisecarver are designed to perform reliably in demanding — even extreme — environments, minimizing the risk of unexpected downtime, decreased productivity and lost revenue.

Here’s a rundown of some of Bishop-Wisecarver’s 7th-axis technologies:

RTUs Featuring DualVee® Technology

Built on durable DualVee Motion Technology®, these RTUs feature excellent dependability and low maintenance. In fact, many systems that run on DualVee guide wheels won’t require any maintenance over the planned life of the machine. Their ability to perform in areas prone to debris makes these RTUs ideal for applications like drilling, welding and painting.

LoPro® RTU: Light and Medium Capacity

  • Two sizes of ready-to-mount RTUs
  • Horizontal or inverted installation
  • Belt-driven actuator with single or double wheel plate
  • Mounting plate with hole pattern matched to the robot
  • 5:1 planetary gearbox (standard)
  • Motor mount matched to the drive motor
  • Cable carrier
  • Homing sensor

DualVee® RTU: Heavy Capacity

  • Capable of high-capacity loading — over 11,700 pound-force (lbf)
  • Robust rack drive with automated lubricator
  • Mounting plate with hole pattern matched to the robot
  • 20:1 planetary gearbox (standard)
  • Motor mount matched to the drive motor
  • Cable carrier and tray
  • Homing sensor and travel bumpers

HepcoMotion Heavy-Duty RTUs

These RTUs support and transfer heavy industrial robots or systems carrying high moment loads. The HepcoMotion HDS2 family features a long life and often zero maintenance. Its four Vee guide wheels can handle over 15,200 lbf and provide self-cleaning capabilities, enabling the system to resist debris in industrial settings. Other features include:

  • Corrosion-resistant stainless steel
  • Unlimited transfer lengths: 4-meter track segments may be joined easily
  • High driving force and low-backlash rack drives (spur or helical)
  • Automatic lubrication options for pinion/rack and optionally for wheels/track
  • The system can run without lubrication, if required
